Spearow/Fearow
Yelsha42:
Spearow is the badass Pidgey. The sharp beak and angular design shows this is a Pokémon not to be messed with. A range of colours that flow naturally gives it an appealing look too. It’s pretty good.
moltres93:
Yeah, compared to Pidgey it is a lot more "angular" as you put it. It has a generic body shape, but the patterns and style of its feathers make it that much more interesting. There’s something about the feather patterns that give it that "first generation Pokémon" feel.
yelsha42:
Can’t really think of much else to say. Shall we move on to Fearow?
moltres93:
After looking as Fearow for a bit longer, it seems to almost change TOO much from Spearow.
Yelsha42:
In comparison to real animals, it’s realistic though. Feather changes from chicks to adults are often extreme. So the only real exaggeration with Fearow is its beak.
moltres93:
Yeah, I understand all that. But more specifically I was talking about its head. The lengthening of the beak is expected, but did it need to get THAT long so suddenly? Also, Fearow's crest seems to come from nowhere.
Yelsha42:
The extension of the beak is the most important aspect of Fearow I would say. It places an emphasis on its natural ability and powers. It’s almost like Spearow’s wing colour went to the crest when it evolved. And again, crests only often appear in maturity.
moltres93:
True I suppose. I can’t quite pick it out, but there are just a few small elements that make Fearow look a little too different to Spearow. That said, Fearow is still quite a good design on its own. I like how Fearow’s body is more streamlined, suggesting it's a fast flier. It's a nice change from Spearow's 'stumpy' body shape.
Yelsha42:
Ill agree it is quite a radical change, but I still think it’s believable.
moltres93:
So summing up, what do you give the Spearow line?
Yelsha42:
I quite like it, so a 8/10.
moltres93:
I think I’ll give it 7/10. Spearow's design is just great, but I think they had the potential to do something slightly better with Fearow.
