Red/Blue/Yellow Cheats and Glitches

Hints

Unlimited Safari Zone time

To have unlimited time in the Safari Zone, stand in an area of grass and tap the d-pad lightly in a way that will make you change the direction you're facing, but you won't take a step. Pokémon can still attack you this way, but you will not use up any steps. This same hint can be used to make Repel and Super Repel last forever.

Cut grass

You can avoid wild Pokemon in tall grass by selecting a Pokemon that has Cut and using it to cut down a small area of the grass.

Invisible walls

If you look closely at the floor in Koga's gym, you can see some little white dots on the floor. These dots are where the invisible walls are.

Hidden Coins

Walk around the Celadon Game corner repeatedly pressing A. You can find up to 100 hidden coins on the ground in this way (note, you have to have the Coin Case for this to work).

Glitches

Red, Blue and Yellow are infamous for having many strange glitches. I’ve listed the more important ones first, and then the minor ones towards the end.

MissingNo.

MissingNo. is probably the most well known glitch in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow. It has become infamous due to the fact that encountering it will cause the item in the 6th slot of your bag to duplicate 129 times. There are two ways to encounter MissingNo. The first way is to trade with anyone in the first room of the Pokémon Research Lab on Cinnabar Island. Exit the Lab, go east, then Surf up and down the east coast (you should be in blocks that are half water and half land) until you are attacked by a MissingNo.

The second and more common way to encounter it is to first talk to the man in Viridian City who shows you a demonstration on how to catch Pokémon. Watch him catch a Weedle and then fly immediately to Cinnabar Island without entering any battles. Now Surf along the coast of the island until you encounter MissingNo. If you catch it, be aware that saving the game afterwards seems to cause many problems... it may even erase your game.

Duplicate Items

To place an item in the sixth slot in your bag, make the little black arrow point to the item you want to move, and press the Select button. Then position the clear arrow next to the item in the sixth slot and press Select again. Now follow the steps above to encounter Missingno. Either defeat it or run away (capturing it is not recommended) and the item in your sixth slot will have a strange symbol where the number should be. This means you have 129 of the item. When you have 99 of the item left, the numbers will go back to normal.

Clone Pokémon

This is a glitch that allows you to clone Pokémon. This is especially useful for Pokémon like Mewtwo and the starters. You'll need a link cable, 2 Pokémon games (either Red, Blue or Yellow), and 2 GameBoys for this trick. On GameBoy A, have the Pokémon that you both want. On the other (GameBoy B), have another Pokémon that neither of you want. Enter Trade mode and trade Pokémon. Turn GameBoy A off, right before it says ''Trade Complete!''. GameBoy B should have ''Trade Complete!'' on the screen. If done correctly, the unwanted Pokémon on GameBoy B should be deleted and replaced with the Pokémon that you wanted to clone. The Pokémon on GameBoy A should still be there. Be careful when doing this cheat though, if not done correctly, sometimes both Pokémon will disappear.

Mew Glitch

There is a way to get Mew without a Game Shark or by going to Nintendo event! To capture it, follow these steps. First, you should not have battled the Youngster with the Slowpoke on Route 25 near Bill's house, or the Gambler on Route 8 just south of the Underground Path. Make sure you have with you a weak Pokémon that can safely weaken a Pokémon at level 7. Go west from Lavender town to get to Route 8 and position yourself so that you're in front of the door of the Underground Path. Save the game here. Then, walk down so that you are in the Gambler's path. Just as you are taking the step into his path, quickly press Start. If done correctly, the menu will come up without the Gambler noticing you. It might take a couple of tries, so if you stuff up, just turn your GameBoy off and try again. Select "Pokémon" and then pick one with Fly and fly to Cerulean City. The Gambler will notice you, but you will fly away before he can come up to battle you. Once you get to Cerulean City, your Start button temporarily won't work because the game thinks you're in a battle. Walk up Nugget Bridge and find the Youngster with the Slowpoke. Make sure that when he notices you, he will walk up to you. If you walk directly up to him or talk to him, your game will crash. Defeat him and your Start button will now be working again. Fly to Lavender Town. Go left towards where the Gambler is located. When you get to Route 8, your start menu will automatically appear. When you press B to close the menu, you will be attacked by a level 7 Mew. Catch it and then save the game. Woohoo =D

Cinnabar Island coast

By surfing on the east coast of Cinnabar Island in the blocks that are half in water and half on land, you'll find Pokémon that were in the area you were last in. This is useful because you can come here right after you've been in the Safari Zone and you'll be able to capture Safari Zone Pokémon by weakening them with attacks and capture them with regular PokéBalls. If you talk to the man in Viridian who shows you how to capture Pokémon and then watch his demonstration before surfing here, you can encounter Pokémon over level 100 (and MissingNos and other glitched Pokémon). Capturing Pokémon here does not have any side-effects, but the Pokémon that are over level 100 will return to level 100 after gaining experience in battle. However, you can raise their levels more with Rare Candies and you can also use them in two-player battles because your Pokémon don't receive EXP this way. Raise your Pokémon to level 999 with use of the "duplicate items" glitch, and bring it out in a battle against your friend!

Glitch City

This is a place(?) in Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow that can be accessed by following a series of steps. The city is full of random items and pixels, and is probably the most exciting place in the game. To get there, go into the Safari Zone and take about 150 steps. Try and exit the Safari Zone. When the guy asks if you're leaving early, answer no. Then save the game inside the Safari Zone and turn it off. Then turn it back on and go out of the Safari Zone. This time, he'll ask you if you'd like to join the Safari Game. Answer no again, and step out. Now Fly anywhere you want to and walk around until you hear the Safari Zone's PA, "Ding-Dong!" and you'll be transported back to the Safari Zone. Walk out of the building and you'll be in Glitch City! There are some crazy things you can do in this city, and many things to experiment with. Glitch City will look different depending on where you Fly to before being transported back to the Safari Zone. Be careful in here, as there have been reports of people being stuck here forever and games freezing up. To exit the city, Fly somewhere else. It's not recommended that you save in here, and it's not a good idea to enter without a Flying Pokémon.

Cooltrainer move

Otherwise knows as the Ditto trick, this glitch involves an attack called Cooltrainer. Have a Ditto transform in a battle with a wild Pokémon. Now use the Select button to switch two of Ditto's new attacks around, and then defeat the Pokémon. The next time you enter a battle with Ditto, it will have a move called the Cooltrainer move. It will have 0 PP, so use a PP restoring item and use it. The attack does a lot of bizarre glitchy things and sometimes the game freezes up. But usually, the opponent's HP bar will keep going up and down until it faints. KO'd!

Reboard/skip the SS. Anne

There are two ways reboard the ship. The first way is when on the S.S. Anne, defeat your rival. Get HM01 (Cut), then fight one of the trainers on the boat. Intentionally lose the battle. You will be transferred to the last Pokémon Center you visited, but the S.S. Anne will not have left. To skip the S.S. Anne altogether, but still be allowed to board it later, trade a Pokémon to your game with the move Cut and defeat Misty. You can progress in the game normally without having to set foot in the S.S. Anne. You can come back later when you have the Surf HM to see the truck on the island to the east of the ship.

Get on Cycling Road without a bike

It's possible to get on Cycling Road without a bike. First, deposit your bike into your PC. Then go to one of the Cycling Road entrances. The guard will stop you and tell you that pedestrians are not allowed on Cycling Road. Hold down the left button and press A repeatedly. Eventually you'll take a step forward past the guard and you'll be able to walk onto Cycling Road (you'll automatically get on your bike, even though you're not carrying it with you).

Invisible PC

In the hotel in Celadon City, go to as far as you can into the top right-hand corner. Take a step back so there is one space between you and the front wall, and face forwards. Press A to access an invisible PC. This PC is normal, works fine and can be used like any regular PC. The reason this PC is here is because the Celadon Hotel is actually a Pokémon Centre with some changes made to make it look different. But they forgot to take the PC out, so it's still there where the PC normally is in a Pokémon Centre.

Man on roof

Make sure you don't have the key to the Cinnabar Island Gym with you. Chose a Pokémon with Surf and surf along the east coast of the island. When you get back on land, make sure that you are in front of the Gym, so immediately after you come out you get the message saying "The door is locked..." and the man standing near the Gym will now be standing on top of the roof. Hilarious.

See Ghost Pokémon without Sliph Scope

This glitch allows you to see Ghost Pokémon in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town without the Sliph Scope. However, you will not be able to battle the Pokémon, so you still need to obtain the Sliph Scope to advance in the game. When you enter a battle with a wild Ghost Pokémon, look at your Pokémon team. Check on of your Pokémon’s stats, and when you return back to the battle, you'll now be able to see the Pokémon you're facing.

Youngster glitch

After you defeat the first youngster on the Nugget Bridge north of Cerulean City, walk up the bridge until he is one space above the top edge of the screen. Also make sure that you are facing forward. Then, walk one space forward and quickly press Start at the same time. If performed correctly, he will appear floating in the water in the top left corner of the screen. You can do whatever you want on the menu, but as soon as you exit the menu, he returns to his regular location.

Fish in a statue

The statues in Gyms can be used for fishing. Just stand in front of one and use a Rod.

Disappearing water on Cycling Road

Enter Cycling Road from Celadon City. At the top of the hill (where you won't roll down the hill), go up next to the rocks on the right side of the path. Cycle up and down around this area while watching the water and land on the other side of the rocks. There is a patch of water/land that keeps disappearing and reappearing. Strange.

Stand in a tree

Use Cut on any tree blocking a path. Stand in its place, save the game and reset it. When you start up your game again, you'll be standing in the same square as the tree.

Bicycle music

When you are in a dungeon with rocks that require Strength, get on your bicycle. Use Strength to push a rock down a hole. Go down right after the rock, and you will be walking around with the bicycle music on when you are not on the bike.
