Rattata/Raticate

Okay, everyone who's played Red and Blue has seen Rattata pop up eighty million times within the first ten minutes of starting the game. Taking this into account, do you think they made Rattata's design interesting enough that the majority of fans don't feel the urge to slit their wrists every time they run into one?

Well ill say this: it’s better than Bidoof XD Which is strange in a way considering Bidoof’s design seems a little more detailed than Rattata. Rattata completely resembles a cartoon rat, nothing special. Except that it's purple.

I never really liked Bidoof but comparing it to Rattata, I actually have to say that it's better. Rattata basically IS a purple cartoon rat, and when it evolves into Raticate it basically becomes a more detailed, meaner looking cartoon rat. The majority of first generation designs were very original and exciting, but Rattata is just one of the minority.

That said, the fact that Rattata is rather cute gives it appeal. And to start with plainer Pokémon like reptiles, rats and bugs seems to be a running theme.

Yes, so far we've had some pretty good evolution examples- the Pokémon start out simple and then become more interesting/uber as they mature. What I don't like about Rattata evolving into Raticate though is that they really look nothing like each other... I mean if they had the same colour scheme I could understand but they almost look like they could be apart of different evolution lines.

I think the teeth make it clear enough. A lot of animals change their fur colour when maturing.

Yes, but from purple to a more realistic brown? Just doesn’t seem to fit for me. What do you think about Raticate on its own?

Again fairly plain, but kind of badass at the same time. The tail changes too to look more realistic.

Yeah, it's about as generic as Rattata, which is a bit disappointing. Though you're right that the badassness (is that a word?) does make it a bit better. Rattata’s tail was the only interesting thing about it, so I really think they could have done something better with Raticate's tail.

I’m giving the Rattata line 3/10. It's just too boring, and its evolution is pretty poor in terms of getting more interesting.

I give it 5/10 ‘cause it’s passable, if a bit dull. Not a good design but not a bad one either.
