Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot
Yelsha42:
Hm, they misnamed Pidgey... While it’s named after a pigeon, it’s clearly based closer to the European sparrow. However Spearow stole that name. In terms of design it is quite plain and sticks very closely to the design of a sparrow. The black eye markings and accentuated eyebrows are the closest things to trademarks. The beak is small and curved suggesting a seed eater.
moltres93:
Although Pidgey's pretty simple, it's far from generic. Its tallons are FAR larger proportionally compared to a real sparrow, and it has the interesting head feathers and eye markings. It might be that the colour scheme isn't all that interesting that immediately makes people think, "generic bird".
Yelsha42:
I don’t think the larger talons really make too much of a difference. If anything they just make Pidgey appear mildly more chibi.
moltres93:
Either way, they still make it look less like your garden variety sparrow. Okay, moving on to Pidgeotto. One of my absolute favourite Pokémon in terms of design. Its body is a little longer and less round like a sparrow. Its tail feathers create an interesting "fan" effect and Pidgey’s head feathers have evolved into a long crest.
Yelsha42:
The addition of bright colours to the crest and tail also make it more interesting.
moltres93:
Yes, Pidgeotto really is a beautiful design. They’ve turned a common bird into something completely new and far from generic.
Yelsha42:
With Pidgeot, as far as the body's concerned, little has changed. However the yellow in the tail feathers has disappeared and instead appeared on the head crest which is now a lot longer.
moltres93:
Yes, this is probably the least amount of change we've seen in Pokémon evolution so far. While the longer head crest looks awesome, I really think they could have done more to Pidgeot to make it more different to Pidgeotto. I mean, if even the anime producers can get the two mixed up, you KNOW there's something wrong XD
Yelsha42:
So true XD. Given that I'd only rate the Pidgey line a 7/10.
moltres93:
For me, Pidgeotto bumps it up to a 8/10.
